It's illustrative of the SORRY history of the Democratic Party in this generation. Too many Democrats were in bed with the Reagan administration, for example, and if you follow the $$$$ today, you can see that the Democratic Party is basically toothless to be able to make any substantive changes today.

Of course, there are many Democrats that have fought for the right things. It was many Democrats that helped end the Vietnam War, exposed Watergate, Iran/Contra, and other right-wing follies, fought for environmental laws, worker-safety laws, abortion rights, women's rights, etc. We may also get some form of national health care in the near future.
