who referred to (Canadian PM Brian) Mulroney as 'Muldoon'.

(Yes, Canada and New Zealand *are* pretty much the same country!)

And Gerald Ford once gave his best wishes to President Sadat and 'your great country of Israel' - this was before Camp David, when the two countries were still bitter enemies.

Compared with that, Obama's gaffe seems pretty minor.
