New Jersey's gay rights favor revives Republican right

WASHINGTON (AFP) - In ruling that homosexual couples have the same constitutional rights as heterosexual couples, the New Jersey Supreme Court threw a much-needed bone to conservative Republicans trying to galvanize their glum voter base.

A religious right organization, "Concerned Women for America", denounced the ruling as a move by agenda-driven judges wanting "to force" people to accept homosexual marriages.

But the group, just like the Catholic League for Religious and Civil Rights and the Alliance Defense Fund, recognized it as a "wake-up call" for their faithful.

The conservatives immediately used the bonanza to remind voters to support a ban on gay marriage, scheduled for a referendum in eight states on November 7, along with legislative and gubernatorial elections.

"Nothing less than the future of the American family hangs in the balance if we allow one-man, one-woman marriage to be redefined out of existence," said James Dobson, president of Focus on the Family.
