George Romney, then Governor of Michigan, was the hope of the liberal Republicans in first part of the 1968 campaign. He ran with Governor Rockefeller's blessing. For those too young to remember, liberal Republican was not an oxymoron in those days and Nelson Rockefeller was the leader of that wing of the GOP.

Anyway, he fell flat on his face as a candidate after he criticized the Vietnam War. At first he supported continuing the war effort, but then backtracked and said he had been "brainwashed." Even opponents of the war were unimpressed. Romney's downfall gave Nixon a clear field.
