the media like to use are not very useful. The media labeled him as some wild lefty; he always described himself as a centrist.

Some people, including Democrats, labeled his "social" positions (translate: civil unions bill) as "liberal."

These labels don't serve any purpose these days, since the parties are changing. Nevertheless, Dean did not run as a liberal.
