It was a means of survival while she and her family waited to hear from the United States goverment about whether they qualified for the refugee program. Her family,
Jews from Moscow, wanted to escape religious persecution.
In 1994, New York City was no longer a painting in the gallery of Mrs. Rapoport's mind. It became real — the family received refugee status. They were free to worship as they pleased.

Mrs. Rapoport, a
computer programmer, studied English, while her husband, Yuriy, a civil engineer, became a construction inspector. Their children, Alex, 25, and Elena, 19, attended school.
Soon Mrs. Rapoport, 45, learned enough English to pursue a job. Eventually, she became a computer programmer at Accenture at the World Trade Center. Her salary helped buy a condominium near the beach.

Some classmates have expressed surprise to me upon learning recently that this same Jonathan—artsy, warm, gentle Jonathan— had worked for years in the
Information Technology Department of J&H March and McLennan Inc., an international insurance brokerage firm, in a corporate Wall Street environment
95floors up in the North Tower of the World Trade Center. Jon had found another path of exciting ideas and new challenges working with computers and supervising others. That was Jonathan—unbound by your or my expectations, willing to take a turn when it felt right.

Some years ago, Jon told me that, during his daily commute from Brooklyn to the financial district in Manhattan, Jesus had tapped him on the shoulder. Jonathan became a devout Christian, joining and taking a leadership role in the
Zion Lutheran Church and forming a Bible study group at work. He found a path to spiritual peace through his work in the church, study of the Bible, humility, relationship with God, and many acts of charity. At Christmas, he asked his family to forgo buying gifts for him and instead to give to a needy person.

Nov. 7, 2001
He was a pro at
software design, a lover of good food and he knew his Indian motion pictures.
Before coming to the United States to work on a
three-month project with Marsh & McLennan, Shreyas Ranganath was awash in the high-tech excitement of
Bangalore, a place known by some as the Silicon Valley of India. In the Southern India city, Ranganath soaked up knowledge and experience in software design and became an expert.
(...)
His expertise landed him the job in New York City and he went to work on the
97th floor of One World Trade Center. Baalebail, who works for the same consultancy as Ranganath, allowed the young man and another software designer, Shashi Kiran Kadaba, to stay in his Hackensack, N.J., home.

Phoenix working for a project at American Express Bank
Stanley McCaskillStanley McCaskill was called a mama's boy in the housing projects on West 112th Street, where he lived from the time he came into this world. Everyone knew that his 77- year-old mother, Ella Mae McCaskill, had a tight hold on him. But he did not mind being picked on about it. Neither did she. Mr. McCaskill would call his mother every day from his job at 1 World Trade Center, where he was a guard for
Advantage Security. She told him to. She gave him a prayer cloth and a tiny red Bible for his wallet. His mother knew the size of his belt, his pants, his shirt, even the name of his barber. At age 47, he had not moved out, even though his mother did not care for some of his girlfriends. "He loved her," said his cousin, Carolyn Louallen. "He just didn't want to leave her."
