BONNERS FERRY --
A Sandpoint man who caused a potentially dangerous situation when he fired a handgun in the air over two people during the Moyie Mud Bog last month will spend the next six months behind bars.

John Haworth, 21, also got a terse tongue lashing by District Judge Quentin Hardin, who characterized his actions in the incident as outlandish and reckless behavior.

In a plea bargain agreement, Haworth's charges of felony assault were reduced to a misdemeanor. He was also charged with use of a deadly weapon and concealing a dangerous weapon, both misdemeanors.

According to court documents, Derek Christopher Thomas told Sheriff's deputies he saw Haworth load a .22 caliber revolver near the band stand during the the first annual Mud Bog held at the Behrman property four miles from Highway 2 May 8. Thomas then located Bruce Behrman, who owned the property where the three-day event drew over 5,000.

After both men told Haworth to follow them, Thomas said he uttered obscenities, pointed the pistol at them, then aimed it in the air and fired. He then ran toward his vehicle.
