"Gun culture" is by no means unique to the US. The idea of making loud noises at a wedding or at new year's celebrations to scare away evil spirits who might bring bad fortune on the marriage or the new year is universal throughout the Eurasian land mass. And while in eastern Asia and western Europe, the noisemaker of choice is fireworks, from central Europe to central Asia it's more commonly guns. From Serbia to Afghanistan, weddings involve the mass discharge of firearms into the air, and I rather suspect new year's celebrations do as well.
