| 50. I find that forum rules against personal insults can actually be counter-productive in this context |
|
Because, to avoid violating forum rules against personal insults, a lot of invective gets couched in general terms ("gun worshipers think this," "gun grabbers want that") which only serves to get everybody else's back up, and thus needlessly polarize the discussion.
It's why I try, if I'm going to get verbally abusive, to make it personal; not "anyone who's a gun grabber is an idiot" but rather "you, poster X, are an idiot." If it gets me into trouble occasionally, so be it. It beats this passive-aggressive "did I call you personally a 'gun grabber/hugger'?" evasion crap.
