| 15. Well, only a small minority of gun owners are hunters (less than 1 in 5)... |
|
and most hunters I know eat what they kill, though they certainly do enjoy the hunt. I am not a hunter myself, but it is my impression that it is more than a "sport" though; it is not a game, but something more deep-rooted. Humans are apex predators, after all, not herbivores, and most of us still obtain much of our protein from meat. I think it is probably more honest to kill the animal yourself, as quickly and humanely as possible, after it has lived a full life in the wild, than to buy the animal shrinkwrapped at the grocery store and pretend something didn't have to die to provide us that nutrition. I may take up hunting someday, but the big problem is opportunity and expense.
The primary reason Americans own guns are (1) defensive purposes and (2) recreational target shooting, and semiautomatic firearms are the most popular choices for both roles.
I think a lot of non-gunnies don't fully understand the term "semiautomatic," and the gun-control side plays to that. The pistol your local police officer carries on her/his hip is semiautomatic, as are the pistols used in target competition at the Olympic Games.
