48. Yep, just a tool ...
The AK47 is a huge success because it is a low-maintenance design, but mostly because the Soviets made brazillions of the things and gave them away, helped other countries set up AK47 manufacturing facilities. So of course, the AK market share is large.

Yeah, Afghanistan pitted the old AK-47 that the Afghans had against the newer Russian AK-74. There are probably more factors than rifle tech that caused the Russians to pull out.
