When I went through Basic, they taught us to use full auto to fire 3-round bursts. With very little practice you can learn how to make a nice triangular pattern. Very effective, very lethal. And you can still kill more people more rapidly than with a bolt action.
And perhaps I should have clarified, but when I said "single-shot" I meant a non-auto bolt action, since you can only fier one shot before you have to chamber the next shell.
