Judge strikes down Bush plan for snowmobiling in Yellowstone, Grant Teton

(Washington-AP) -- The high-pitched sound of snowmobiles apparently won't be heard in full force anytime soon in either Yellowstone or Grand Teton national parks.

A federal judge has ordered the National Park Service to revive a plan that will eventually ban snowmobiles from those two nature preserves.

In his ruling, U-S District Judge Emmet Sullivan says the Bush administration shouldn't have set aside a Clinton administration plan phasing out snowmobiles in favor of larger snow coaches in a bid to reduce pollution in the parks.

Sullivan rejected the Park Service's argument that the new rules set to take effect Wednesday were based on a generation of cleaner-burning snowmobile engines.
