I also believe in some things that conservatives claim to believe. But conservatives define these beliefs differently than I do. For example:

I believe in "personal responsibility." To me, that means being responsible for one's own actions and choices, but recognizing that some things are beyond our control. To a conservative, it means no help from society for anyone who isn't wealthy.

I believe in "fiscal responsibility." To me, that means being financially responsible and doing one's best to live up to their obligations. To a conservative, that means not taxing the wealthy, limitless spending on defense, and completely trashing our nation's social contract.

I believe in patriotism. To me, that means loving my country, but recognizing where it falls short and supporting efforts to do something about it. It also means trying to restore it to a land of opportunity for all. To a conservative, it means mindless cheerleading and attacking anyone who doesn't share their world view. Conservatives are unable to distinguish patriotism from nationalism.
