I read a news story today.

Does it even matter what it was? No matter how terrible and devastating, there are a million more stories just like it or worse that didn’t make it onto AOL’s front page—so much meaningless horror. This is our world.

I’ve been crying on and off all day and I can’t wait to get home and hug my little boy.

How do we do it? How do walk around and talk about bullshit and do our jobs and watch tv and post our little updates on facebook? How are we all not doubled over with unstoppable tears every goddamned minute of the day? How do we see the things going on around us, how do we know about these things and just continue?

And my whole office saw the same news story. Why isn’t everyone crying? Why aren’t we all crying every day?
