Immerse yourself in the language -- do your best not to USE any English
in your day-to-day activities. Many of my friends were German, I married
a German woman, we only got German TV, and we lived in a German
neighborhood, not the American enclave.

I know many (most?) Germans speak English -- try not to use that as a
crutch -- see if you can get them to tell you the words you are seeking
without asking for them in English.

After a lot of exposure and bar German, I took about 4-6 months worth of
night school classes and became proficient enough where I probably could
have gotten a factory job, if not an office one.
