1. Well, Night of the Living Dead is more about civil rights/racism than anything else.
The images at the end of the film with zombies being lynched by rednecks in grainy black and white photos drives the message home for anyone who didn't get it during the film.

The 2nd film, Dawn of the Dead, is more about consumerism and the mall mentality that was sweeping the nation at that time.

The beauty of zombies, and one of the reasons they're still so popular, is that they can be a metaphor for any number of things. We can project all kinds of fears and insecurities onto them.
