I imagine popularity breeds influence. Hard to deny the latter when the former is an oft used stepping stone to it.

There was a time John Lennon stated The Beatles were more popular than Jesus Christ. In the here and now Taylor Swift is perceived as more influential than the First Lady. I see it as little more than six of one and half a dozen of the other.

(Not that I even know who she is-- I knew the name, and after this post I now know she's a singer too)
