| I am thankful for the writing of Charles Bukowski |
|
Hello and good day to you all!
I am currently reading The Captain Is Out To Lunch And The Sailors Have Taken Over The Ship. Bukowski wrote this book in the last years of his life. It was not written to be published - it was written for his benefit (although Buk would argue that all his writing was for him). The book is a journal - a page or two per day.
If you are familiar with Buk's work, you know he is a writer of sex and drink. He is a writer of life, of work, of drink, and of sex.
But this older writing is more about life. There is little about sex, work, or drinking. Yet Buk is true to himself. It is really, really amazing to read. It is hard to explain, but it is almost like reading something that was penned after someone has passed on.
Black Sparrow Press is printing up a bunch of Buk's writing. Apparently Buk was able to write more during the last five years of his life then he did the first six decades of life. Buk's writing in his old age is a world better then his early work (which I love and what led me to read his entire collection).
What are you feeling thankful for these days?
