It's an anti-war movie. The German soldiers on the U-Boat could care less about Hitler and Nazi policies. If you actually paid attention during the movie, only a single crew member was pro-Nazi. The movie is making commentary on war itself. These men went through hell and sheer terror to get the submarine to resurface, and in the end, it was for nothing. War is quite similar. Think of this Catch-22 quote: "'What is a country? A country is a piece of land surrounded on all sides by boundaries, usually unnatural. Englishmen are dying for England, Americans are dying for America, Germans are dying for Germany, Russians are dying for Russia. There are now fifty or sixty countries fighting in this war. Surely so many countries can't all be worth dying for.'"
