Driving on the autobahn is not a lot different than driving on an interstate here, except people actually know AND obey the rules of the road and aren't likely to cut you off unexpectedly. I would actually worry more about driving a SUV on US highways because if the two lanes are going different speeds you are guaranteed that some dipshit is going to dart right in front of faster moving traffic with no warning and no signal.
It's actually a big myth that people are driving balls to the wall all the time on the autobahn. There are areas where there's no speed limits, but the traffic quite often dictates the max speed you're going to travel. I lived and drove in Germany for almost a month before I finally got the opportunity to open up the Mercedes I was driving and take it to its top end.
The problem with having a SUV in Europe is some of the roads get quite narrow, especially if there's any construction. Even driving a wide sedan can be a bit hairy squeezing in through tight spaces occassionally.
