I pull the covers down and over the posts of the foot-board and then separate them so air can freely circulate around and between them so I'm sure that any residual moisture is completely dried. Low humidity and light deprives any unwanted visitors (bacteria, fungus, etc.) of the needed moisture required to survive.

That's my excuse and I'm sticking with it.
