I was a Senior at U of South Carolina, and worked all day in my hometown driving people to the polls. Whan I got back around 8:00 to the apartment I shared with 3 other guys, they were getting dressed to go to Republican HQ, even though none of them were Republican because, as they put it "free liquor and happy women are hard to beat." I told them I just wanted to lie on the couch and watch the returns. They all laughed and said, "You damn fool, they called the election for Nixon 20 minutes ago." Rather depressing.
