As one of the one in one hundred and fifty folks on this earth for whom this really is true, I'm highly amused. But, I must take a moment to provide a public service announcement:

I have Celiac Sprue, a not very rare and yet not well known disease. I'm allergic to gluten, which is primarily in wheat and barley. It causes the lining of my small intestine to become inflamed and eventually it flattens the cilia in that area so that I end up not absorbing nutrients. Gross, huh? Well, luckily after a couple of decades of getting every diagnosis but the right one, it finally got figured out. I haven't eaten anything with gluten in it for six years and I'm a new woman. I highly recommend to anyone who has been given the diagnosis of IBS or really, any autoimmune disease that you make sure you don't have Celiac - it is the great pretender (see number 8 in the above satire - it really is part of all of those!). Doctors here in the US still believe it is a disease primarily effecting Europeans because it was in Europe that well controlled studies were done and doctors there suspect Celiac first instead of last so many, many more people get the right diagnosis. They finally did a big study here in the US and tested a large contingent of people with and without symptoms and the numbers were the same as in Europe, except that only one in three thousand gets diagnosed here! It should be the first thing the doctors think of but it is still the last here in the country that supposedly has the best healthcare.
