| UGH! My mom just forwarded me a "war on Christmas" e-mail |
|
It was sanctimonious crap about how Christmas has become too "politically correct" and that everyone should forward this "old-fashioned" merry Christmas message to everyone. Here was my response to her:
The whole "war on Christmas" thing is made-up nonsense invented by talk radio and sleaze-ball television preachers.
It all started because retailers wanted to be polite and inclusive by using a phrase that stood for ALL the December/January holidays. That includes Christmas, Hanukkah, New Year's Eve, Boxing Day, the Winter Solstice, Kwanzaa and whatever else gets thrown in there.
It has nothing at all to do with "political correctness" or with anyone being "offended" by Christmas It's ONLY about selling more goods by extending the holiday sales season -- and saving money on signs. But the right-wing noise machine has built it up into some kind of "culture war" that never existed.
Anyone who says that scheming liberals are trying to erase Christmas is selling a snake-oil argument. It's total nonsense. It is nothing more than an excuse for making people angry at each other.
The whole thing serves the interests of radio to talk show hosts and the kind of preachers who take money from old ladies by promising Jesus will heal them through the TV. But it isn't good for anything else.
