In first grade I wanted pointy toe tennis shoes because everyone else had them, instead of the babyish round toed shoes I had. No dice. Ditto on the slingback loafers I wanted in fourth grade. And I didn't get my ears pieced until I was 24 because my mother said only cheap girls had pierced ears.

But what I wanted more than anything was this perfectly ghastly plastic vanity with a bench that was tufted to look like satin. The mirror lifted up and lit up. I thought it was the most beautiful thing in the world and asked for it every Christmas from age 5 to 9. But I never got it.

I did have an Easy Bake Oven, though.
