23. "Coro" earrings weighed a half-pound each and made your earlobes hurt,
the adults in town thought civilization was going to come to naught because the "upper-class" boys started wearing Levis instead of nice trousers; crinkly nylon fabric was popular for clothes (I looked like a pink marshmallow but felt like I was wearing a garbage bag); The My Fair Lady music was inescapable, I remember sitting on the bandstand in the vacant lot trying to slap mosquitos while tootling the first clarinet part of "I'm Getting Married In The Morning" and trying to look glamorous in my fluffy pink sauna dress and Inquisition Coro earrings.

Garter bumps. Girdles. And I thought Elvis was really low-class and wouldn't last long, and Ricky Nelson was really handsome and would be a huge star forever.

And I hated Doris Day Rock Hudson movies then and after two divorces I hate them more. And I couldn't get over James Dean dying. And "Unchained Melody" being on the radio all the time didn't help.

I'm a lot happier as an independent, politically active old broad than I was as a teenager, I tell ya!!!
