Rosie has insisted that she wasn't aware that it was a slur, but George Allen likewise insisted that he didn't know that "Macaca" was offensive. She may or may not have been aware that it was a slur, but to be honest she should have known it. If she were prattling on in a 1930's step-and-fetch-it caricature of "black" speech, it would be offenseive whether or not she knew it. If I were to comment on the breasts of a woman in my workplace, it would be offensive even if I thought I that I was being complimentary.

Rosie should have known better, and she should have been more sincere and contrite in her apology.
