Used to do that tune in our little garage jam band. It was actually pretty difficult-- we did the long version, with all the different vamps. To do it right, the lowest string on the guitar and bass should be tuned down to a low D. (Unless your bassist plays a 5-string, but they weren't common in the '70s.) We also did "Your Mama Don't Dance," but that was trivial by comparison.
Jim Messina actually rocks. Before the partnership with Kenny Loggins, he formed Poco with Richie Furay (ex-Buffalo Springfield) and they were really good as long as he was in the band (first three records).
