The play was quite a bit darker than the musical and didn't have its "happy ending".

My favorite movie musical is "Showboat". I have a copy of the 1936 one with Allan Jones and Irene Dunne which also features the legendary Paul Robeson's "Ol' Man River" and Helen Morgan as Julie. But I don't think you can beat Howard Keel as the greatest leading man in movie musicals so I still have to give a shout-out to the 1951 remake.

I also love "Cabaret" and "Singin' In The Rain."

Actually, I love musicals as a genre.
