My father also asked to not be kept alive if anything happened during his open heart surgery. He was an orthopaedic surgeon and he didn't want to live as a vegetable. Unfortunately, he had a massive stroke during surgery and we took him off life support after donating his kidneys and corneas. We were 17, 15 and 12 and Mom would not let us see him. I'm glad she didn't. We saw him the night before the surgery and that was the last time we saw him.
