The nicer the car, the greater the chance of it being keyed, fender-bended, or otherwise violated. Now I can't say I have any stats to back this up, it's just a superstition on my part. It may actually be more a matter of noticing the damage that occurs, and caring. Like my Jetta recently had some minor damage to the bumper, and I don't really even care. If it were a Ferrari, I imagine I'd be apoplectic. Worse, I'd drive like a wuss just to avoid getting it dinged or scratched.

There was some comedian about 15 years back who suggested that the first thing one do upon getting a fancy expensive car would be to take a hammer to it and put in the first few dents yourself. Then you could drive normally.
