The first time you get charged a late fee they will waive it if you call them and ask nicely.
So if you do this then open a new card (with a different cc company) a month or two later, transfer your balance over, and close your old account. Then if you get charged a late fee on this new account it will still be your *first* (as far as the cc company is concerned) and so they should still waive it.
