20. My kid (17) spilled his guts to me the other night.

I suspected the cigarettes and the pot; because I've smelled them both on him. He informed me that he'd be smoking a lot more when he turned 18. I told him he wouldn't be doing it in the house because 1) his father's allergic to it, and 2)I don't want his little brother getting cancer as a result of his folly. I told him that went for pot, too; and that if I ever found drugs (especially meth, coke, or crack) in the house his ass would be out of here unless he checked into a treatment facility.

I knew he had a girlfriend that he broke up with a few months ago. He had insisted to me that he wasn't involved in anything serious, and never introduced us.

Judging from his evening hours, I also figured that he had spent the night with her on several occasions; so I assumed she probably had her own place, and was a little older than him. I was a little surprised to learn that she was 23.

He explained to me that she was a very confused person, and that in many ways he was more mature than her. I told him that I didn't doubt that. He asked why, and I said that 23 year old women aren't typically attracted to 17 year old guys.

At least he's talking...
