Years ago I got a red circular rash around an insect bite I got while walking through the woods. I assumed it was a spider so I didn't go to the doctor. A couple weeks later I developed high fever, then weeks after that joint pain, then a host of weird symptoms.
They finally figured out it wasn't a spider bite at all, but a tick bite -- I had Lyme disease. My initial symptoms sound similar to yours.
