85. Did He Renounce These Views As Loudly As He Proclaimed Them?
The anti-gay statements Reggie White made didn't hurt me one bit. I was quite happy with my life, comfortable with my faith, and I knew he was full of it.

The reason I was so angry with him, and remain so today, is because of the effect those views had on young gay kids. How many Packers fans, young and gay, contemplated, or maybe even attempted, suicide because of what was said about us? How many Packers fans, young and straight, decided it was okay the beat the crap out of the local fags because of what Reggie White said? The views Reggie White held mattered because of his celebrity. He used his position as a highly visible professional athlete to verbally bash people who had done him no harm.

Maybe he did renounce his bigotry after he left the public eye. If he did, good for him. But why didn't he use his access to the media to publicly renounce his views? Why didn't he use his wealth to undo some of the harm he did?

It's one thing to own one's bigotry through words; it's a lot harder to renounce one's bigotry through tangible actions. I didn't see either of those from Reggie White.
