10. They needed it to happen
Whether they new about it, let it happen, or didn't know, they've gained from it. From the moment it happened. PNAC has been around since 1997, and the idea of it you could say goes back to the early 90's. Actually, the mentality has been around for longer than that. War happens because of something other than just fighting for freedom. Any war. Land, religion, money, resources, it all works. It has worked. It is working. It will continue to work. That's basically human history. That's why you hear that when we supported Hussein, it was ok, because it was a different world back in the 80's. Even though we knew he was a murderer, there was a bigger goal back then.

It's all a game. Today we support a dictator, tomorrow we back away, and next week we go to war with that dictator.

We didn't go into space because we could. We did it to beat the Soviets.

Nothing big ever gets done just because. Or for the fun of it. It happens for certain reasons. That's how it's been, how it is, and probably how it will always be.
