It looked like it was about individual donations.

I don't trust their analysis, it seems to be written to give the impression your friend is pushing.

Like this part: The study, analyzing donations during the 2002 campaign cycle, found that those little guys giving less than $200 to federal candidates, parties or leadership political action committees contributed 64 percent of their money to Republicans.

I don't see what's special about the $200 breakoff point, it seems kind of arbitrary. And I don't think that these contributors would count as "little guys", contributing to political campaigns is kind of a luxury, I would guess that to be able to spare even less that $200, most of these contributors are probably affluent people.
