Journalist and author Robert Kaplan spent time with the U.S. Armed Forces in several countries aorund the world to explore the ways in which U.S. foreign policy was being conducted on the ground. In "Imperial Grunts: The American Military on the Ground," the author writes that the men and women of the American Armed Forces stationed abroad make up the front line for American foreign policy. Their duties often include training local police and military and helping to establish democratic governments. Robert D. Kaplan is the author of ten books on foreign affairs and travel, including "Balkan Ghosts," "Warrior Politics," and "The Ends of the Earth." Mr. Kaplan is currently a correspondent for The Atlantic Monthly.
