What feels Soviet is the concealment of information. That was a regular feature of disasters there. The state didn't want any information getting out that might make it look bad. That even extended to the war in Afghanistan, where families were told to conceal the cause of their son's deaths.
It just seems like our country is headed in that direction. There's never going to be any remotely accurate count of the dead from Katrina, and hundreds, maybe thousands of friends and family members will never find their loved ones and never find closure, while the government tries to make itself look not quite so incompetent by minimizing the numbers of dead.
