She's the daughter of George Rufus Brown.

To the Manor Born Was He

Apparently, Dubya can't shoot as well as Cheney the Great, but then he and Bush Sr. weren't shooting pre-caged pheasant. He was in good spirits, though, and good company as you will see in the Los Angeles Times.

FALFURRIAS, Texas President Bush began the new year with a bang on Thursday, shooting five quail on a bird hunting trip with his father in southern Texas, an excursion he used to set the stage for the 2004 reelection year.

"2004 is going to be a great year for this country," Bush told reporters at the Brooks County Airport before he climbed aboard Air Force One to return to his ranch outside Crawford, Texas, where he is spending the New Year's holiday. "It's going to be a year in which the world will become more peaceful and more people will be able to find work." ...

Bush said he traveled to this ranch town in the southern tip of Texas to spend a day with his father and get some fresh air and exercise. He said he shot five quail far short of the 15 birds permitted under Texas law...

Ah, so earthy, rustic and familial, father and son spending quality time together during the holiday season. Nothing terribly interesting about this little piece of genuine Americana, right? Yeah, but here comes the kicker...

The president's hunting excursion to El Tule Ranch was at the invitation of Nancy Brown Negley, heiress to the Brown & Root Construction Co., the engineering and construction firm that is now a subsidiary of Halliburton.

Negley is the daughter of George R. Brown, former president of Brown & Root and a friend of former President George Bush from his days in the Texas oil business.

Texas blue-blood "birds of a feather flocking together." Just a few familiar names if you are from that neck of the woods, east Texas oil country, not very far from Louisiana oil country. During the summers of my college years I worked off-shore in the oil-drilling industry for Brown & Root, and with Halliburton. Just good ol' boy names, yepper. Until you add a couple of non- Texas names and terms: Cheney, Iraq, Reconstruction and 20 Billion dollars. Interesting...? Read the full story in the Los Angeles Times   (LINK EXPIRED)

Small world.
