It took a while to find the right drug. A lot of the antidepressants didn't work. Be sure you get a thorough physical, including thyroid tests, done first. There are lots of physical causes of depression.
On the alcohol: it is an antidepressant, but a lot of people (especially men) use it to self-medicate. It doesn't work very well.
