Should people be allowed to eat animals? Ever? Any of them? Under any circumstances? Or, should it be criminalized?

And, perhaps more to the point- should organizations like PETA continue to soft-pedal that aspect of their agenda, (much like pro-life organizations soft-pedal the fact that the majority of them favor criminalization most if not all forms of birth control) because they know it is wildly out of step with how the vast majority of the public feels?

For the record, I personally eat a mostly plant-based diet, I eat (free range) poultry once in a blue moon, and I think factory farming is terrible for the animals, the food consumer and the environment. I believe strongly in displaying compassion towards ALL animals, including humans.

But I think PETA has a tendency to go waaaaaaaay fucking overboard (like when they protest the city of New York for trying to deal with the rat infestation)... I think hectoring people about their food choices is nearly as bad as hectoring people about their sex lives, and as a Jew, I also happen to think PETA's use of the Holocaust in their ads is particularly noxious. They don't speak for me.
