I never really understood his popularity in the Old Soviet Union, which I understand was censored. This was a real mistake on their part when curiosity in his writing extended to his essays and short stories. He did not tolerate fools. I have his collected works at home and have brought up my children with his writing.
I was furious when the Missouri quarter was issued and did not feature his contribution. He is Missouri's one claim to fame not the monument to "manifest destiny". Writers like Twain guarantee that there will always be skeptics in America.
