Not all of them are dumb as rocks, even the Sturmtruppen.

I would argue that intelligence has nothing to do with gullibillity or the very human characteristic of believing one's own lies for the cause of selfish self-interest.

You are partially right, but the situation is more complex than that, IMHO. So many other negative market-tested human characteristics are involved here, not just stupidity.
