60. Welcome to DU from another Californian. And yes, we DO sympathize.

You couldn't be more spot-on, kineneb. I'm in Southern California. Our big one was in 1994. What wreckage. Horrors. Loss of life. Even so, it doesn't even begin to hold a candle to what's happened this week. We're on the Pacific "rim of fire" so all the talking heads speculating about whether it could happen here (somewhere along an American coastline) aren't just saying empty words.

As I write this, the chyron at the bottom of the screen on CNN is still fresh in my mind - 60,000 believed dead just from the disasters themselves, and perhaps at least that many more could die from disease that sets in. Just awful. Parts of the Pacific fleet were dispatched to be of assistance. Nice to know that kind of force can be used for good - for a change. So sad, though, that it takes something this horrendous.

And welcome to DU, chadk. Talk about being on the front lines.

BTW - thanks for posting the list, quaoar. A great service. Kick!
