19. Assassination Attempt = Sympathy Vote
There was some buildup on cable news, a week or two ago, about a fellow who had gone missing. He was believed to have intentions of trying to kill Bush. I expect him to emerge after they keep quiet about him for a bit. There is some shade of assassination attempt. Perhaps it is just alleged, but if Bush is doing badly enough, maybe they'll actually have him shot to try to let the party ride a wave of pity into another term. After the shooting, leading up to the election, Faux and their ilk will try to paint Kerry supporters and anyone supporting ABB as "just like the sniper/gunman/assassin/terrorist/whatever". If re-elected, the would-be assassin's trial and execution become the new media spectacle for months. If Bush is actually wounded, perhaps he conveniently passes between the election and swearing in. Do they need him any longer? Then we get a President Cheney, who would never be electable, himself. Far-fetched? Sure. Tinfoil hat? Yes. But I predicted the invasion of Iraq in October 2000.... I think of that BBC movie, "To Play the King", when I write this idea. At the end, amidst disastrous scandal, the Prime Minister is assassinated by insiders in order to preserve his legacy or his power base or his reforms. Dang I need to see that again....
