wasn't so bad when he became President. He was very much a staunch Democrat and did a lot to strengthen the federal union. He was constantly at odds with his VP John C Calhoun (author of the Nullification Doctrine - used as justification for succeeding from the Union during the Civil War. I totally blame the Civil War on him and I'm from the South).

And we get the donkey symbol from Andy. It has been traced back to political cartoonist of that day who used to draw/describe Jackson as a stubborn donkey (or jackass as they probably intended). It came to symbolized all Democrats after him.

Sorry...have a degree in history and took an entire class on the Age of Jackson. Dying to use some of this random knowledge...........
