2. Research the sponsor on the internet.

I'm looking in to sponsoring a child and one key thing is how much of the money actually goes to the child. I was approached by a group claiming to be the group in "About Schmidt." However, they had a different name, and their CEO paid himself a pretty damn generous salary. However, in its favor, this group did not require specific religious activity/membership of its kids, and as donor you do receive a photo and can correspond with the kid. You can even arrange to visit the child.

I plan to choose a little girl from one of the third world countries , whose labor and natural resources are exploited by our great American corporations, or where the CIA has fomented civil unrest. Our country has done a lot of damage to the rest of the world and I feel better taking some small action to help one child, then hoping that our elected officials will see fit to provide foreign aid at that level.

Something like this will be a great humanitarian and learning experience to share with your daughter. You will find an increased interest on both your parts in geography and the socio-economic-political goings on in the country where your foster child lives.
