5. I agree with the poster on an earlier Bush/Normandy thread:
it's a desecration. I don't say that flippantly, I genuinely believe his presence there is a desecration of that sacred spot.

For all Reagan's faults, at least he had the forthrightness to go to Bitburg. The last I heard, though, German officials had decided to blow up the recently re-discovered foundations of the Führerbunker, so I guess our triumphant Generalissimus is out of luck.

I'd almost be willing to bet that he might feel compelled to introduce some sort of platitudinous drivel to the effect that "yet we do not forget that the men who stood against you were valiant too" -- which was true in a great many cases, valor not being synonomous with righteousness or the justness of one's cause -- but it would be grossly inappropriate at a D-Day commemoration.

Back when Bush visited Auschwitz a poster here reported that the one question he managed to come up with to ask the official was "Does anyone ever question the story you present here?" And of course we all know the Prescott Bush thing. I don't think there's any doubt that deep down inside somewhere Junior has some sympathies.
